A Subtle Word Of Caution.....
|
Make Sure That Being A Member Of The BBB Means What You Think It Means
How often do you see this logo in an ad?
Or do you see these words? Member of the BBB
When considering different service professionals to hire, it is very reasonable to inquire about a company’s credentials. Sometimes it may be necessary, though, to read between the lines a bit. Be forewarned that when a contractor pipes up that they are members of the Better Business Bureau, or proudly flashes the BBB logo, it may not always mean what you think.
Most businesses that are members of the BBB abide by the codes of ethics they have agreed to. Some, however, fall short of these expectations and operate under a different set of standards. Be cautious. As hard as it may be to believe, sometimes a company will include this well-recognized logo in their ad and not be members at all. It is there to give you a particular impression that is not being accurately represented.
Sometimes a company could easily be a member, but have several complaints filed against them; have unresolved complaints on record; or worse, yet, have had their memberships revoked for various breaches of conduct. It is well worth ensuring you are working with a reputable firm with a clean record. The only way to know is to check yourself, or to choose from a resource where the businesses have already been "checked" out.
A further word to the wise.... if you are considering hiring a company that suggests you check out their record with the BBB, this could be a GOOD sign. Many businesses work hard to earn your satisfaction and are proud of their accomplishments in this area. If they are making the suggestion, they are probably not afraid of what you will find, should you take them up on the recommendation. Few, though, may take their chances that by their mentioning that, it will be sufficient "evidence" to you that they are in good standings. Either way, checking out their stories and their records with the BBB is easy enough to do. The information you obtain can be world´s helpful in determining the type of service experience you receive.
